Following on from the hugely successful Art Unbound sculpture installation in the Garden in 2019, the Rococo Garden team are planning another exhibition in summer 2020 which we have called ‘Linger’. We are now on the look-out for skilled craftspeople to be part of this curated collection of “sitting places” which will run from 16 May to 9 September 2020.  The exhibition is designed to bring imaginative approaches to the creation of garden seating by artists, designer-makers and artisans from around the region. It will also have the benefit of providing more places around the Garden from which its beauty and tranquillity can be enjoyed by thousands of visitors.

This practical, affordable art will complement the spirit of the Garden and encourage appreciation of its character. As such ‘Linger’ will be an invitation for visitors to pause and take in the beauty of their surroundings, away from the busyness of everyday life.

These sitting places will be made from the kind of materials that would have been available in the 1740s and, where possible, locally sourced. We are open to all kinds of interpretations, from high-end conceptual installations to affordable, functional pieces, and we are happy to take ready-made or touring work. The pieces selected must be fit-for-purpose, i.e. strong, durable, appropriate for outdoor use and comfortable to sit on – and supplied ready to install. All works will be for sale.

We are holding an open day on Saturday 11 January 2020 and artists and makers are encouraged to visit on this date to take inspiration from the Garden’s gorgeous surroundings. If you would like to attend, please email us and book your place. If you would then like to apply, our deadline for entries (it’s a simple application process) is 20 January 2020. If an artist is selected, the piece will need to be completed by 31 March 2020.

The exhibition will be overseen by local visual arts curator and project manager Niki Whitfield. For an informal chat or to find out more about the exhibition, contact Niki by emailing her or ringing on 07821 098171.
