Charcoal Burning Demonstrations

Tuesday 11 August 2026

Join traditional charcoal burner Alex at the charcoal kiln at Painswick Rococo Garden on St Alexander’s Feast Day, the patron saint of charcoal burning.

Alex will be emptying the charcoal kiln and giving two short public talks at 11am and 2pm, each lasting approximately 15 minutes. Come along to discover more about the traditional craft of charcoal burning and see the kiln being emptied.

Charcoal will also be available to buy from the Garden.

British charcoal is high quality, burns for longer, is easy to light and contains no additives. Buying British charcoal also supports traditional woodland management and helps keep this important heritage craft alive.

We also put the by-product of charcoal making, biochar, to good use in our organic garden, where it helps retain nutrients in the soil.

Talks: 11am and 2pm
Location: Charcoal kiln, woodland
Cost: Included with Garden admission
