There’s no better time than autumn to experience the rich tapestry of colours and seasonal charm at Painswick Rococo Garden.
The graceful 1740s pleasure garden transforms into a golden haven every autumn, blending the rolling landscape with historic whimsy and harvest delights.
On bright days, the low sun casts the most beautiful, rich, golden light across the garden, flashing through the woodland and reflecting brightly on the Red House windows.
The garden’s woodlands burst into flame-hued brilliance as beech, oaks, and other deciduous trees replace summer greenery with fiery reds, oranges and golds.
In the Exedra Garden, late flowers remain in bloom until being lifted and divided, and autumn cyclamen create a carpet of colour above the maze. Dried Hydrangea heads and tall artichokes provide structural silhouettes in the cool air.
Visitors can enjoy peaceful walks through the woodland or take in views across the rolling landscape.
The Kitchen Garden and meadows provide fresh produce for the on-site café and shop, where you can find seasonal soups, salads, baked goods, jams, chutneys and the garden’s own beer and cider.
The Garden Team stays busy during this time with tasks such as mowing meadows, planting spring bulbs, dividing perennials and collecting seed for the next growing season.
For families, the Garden remains a great day out. There are rustic play areas, historic follies, a fairy castle carved into a beech tree and the 250th anniversary maze to explore.
The October half-term children’s trail offers extra activities and dogs on short leads are welcome throughout the garden.
Opening hours in autumn are Thursday to Sunday, 10 to 5 pm, with daily opening during school holidays.
In November, the garden is open on Saturdays and Sundays, 10 to 4 pm with last entry always one hour before closing.
Autumn at Painswick Rococo Garden combines seasonal colour, historic interest and activities for all ages, making it an excellent time to visit.
