22 June, 3.30pm & 7.30pm

This special Midsummer outdoor event, situated in sight of Laurie Lee’s beloved valley, is set to celebrate our local hero, poet, and novelist.

With exclusive entry to the Rococo Garden included in your ticket, join us for a unique performance in the heart of the garden for a captivating weave of words and music.

Laurie Lee’s extraordinary story, told in a captivating weave of music and his own words.

Red Sky at Sunrise follows Laurie Lee through his much-loved trilogy, Cider with RosieAs I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning and A Moment of War, when Lee famously walked out of the Slad valley one midsummer morning, and ended up fighting in the Spanish Civil War.

Two of our best-loved actors, Anton Lesser (Game of Thrones, Wolf Hall, Endeavour) and Charlie Hamblett (Killing Eve, Ghosts, The Burning Girls) play the role of Laurie Lee older and younger, along with a rich array of other characters. Together with musicians from The Orchestra of the Swan, they celebrate Lee’s engaging humour as well as his darker side in a performance that has startling resonance with modern events.
Devised as a show by Judy Reaves, the text by Laurie Lee has been adapted by Deirdre Shields. The Orchestra of the Swan’s Artistic Director David Le Page has devised a gorgeous musical programme that weaves around Lee’s writing, from the lush Gloucestershire countryside to the dry landscapes of Spain via the music of Vaughan Williams, Walton, Holst, Elgar, Britten, Grainger, Albeniz, Turina and De Falla.  Guitarist Mark Ashford features.

This special pair of shows follows sell-out ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ performances at the RSC in Stratford and the Oxford Playhouse.

Each performance will be held on the Bowling Green, nestled in the heart of Painswick Rococo Garden.  Relax and enjoy the show in our glorious valley setting, bringing you closer to the Cotswold countryside which so profoundly affected and inspired Lee.

There will be two performances on 22 June: one starting at 3.30pm and another at 7.30pm.  The show runs for 1 hour 50 minutes plus a 20 minute interval. We have ample free parking at the Garden. You’re welcome to arrive and get comfortable up to 45 minutes prior to the start of the performance.

Tickets for this immersive theatrical experience are £40 per person and can be booked by clicking here. We’re expecting it to be very popular, so don’t delay!
